What to do after the Funeral
Helping you along
1. Take time to heal
After the service, it's important to give yourself time to rest and grieve.
- Local support groups
- One-on-one counseling
- Faith-based or spiritual guidance
- Online communities
- Grief Resources
If you'd like help finding resources, we’re here for you.
2. How do I handle the deceased’s belongings?
There is no rush. Take your time. When you're ready:
- Consider gathering close family to help sort through items
- Decide what to keep, donate, or give to loved ones
- If needed, speak with an estate attorney or organizer for support
3. Thank Supporters
Send thank-you notes to:
- Those who sent flowers or made donations
- Friends/family who brought meals or helped in other ways
- Clergy, musicians, or speakers who participated in the service
Tip: Keep a list from the guestbook or the funeral director to help with this.
4. Do I need to notify any organizations or agencies?
Yes, it’s important to notify:
- Social Security Administration
- Employer or pension administrator
- Insurance companies (life, health, auto, homeowners)
- Banks and credit unions
- Credit card companies
- Utility and service providers
- Veteran’s Affairs (if applicable)
- DMV (for driver’s license and vehicle title)
We can provide a checklist to help with these notifications.
5. What about the will or estate?
If your loved one had a will or estate plan, the executor will need to:
- Locate the will and any estate planning documents
- Contact the estate attorney or probate court
- Meet with the executor to begin estate settlement
- File life insurance claims
- Close or transfer accounts and memberships
- Cancel or transfer utilities and subscriptions
We recommend consulting an attorney if you’re unsure where to start.
6. Should I keep copies of the death certificate?
Yes. You'll need multiple certified copies of the death certificate for:
- Life insurance claims
- Bank account access
- Vehicle or property title changes
We can help you request more copies if needed.
7. How soon should I handle financial matters or close accounts?
There’s no strict timeline, but it’s wise to begin within a few weeks. Focus on:
- Protecting assets
- Preventing identity theft
- Settling outstanding debts
Take things one step at a time. Ask for help if it feels overwhelming.
8. Can I still hold a memorial later if I didn’t have one?
Yes, many families choose to hold a celebration of life or gathering weeks or months later. You can plan something personal and meaningful at a time that feels right for you.
9. What if I have more questions?
Please don’t hesitate to reach out. We understand that this journey is personal and sometimes confusing. Our staff is always here to guide you with kindness and care.
