Cathleen Schmidt
Age 59, passed peacefully at home with family on June 8, 2023.
Cathleen was born in Pittsburgh and raised there by her beloved parents, the late Thomas Leo Schmidt and Patricia Ann Zentner Schmidt. She is cherished and survived by her twin sister, Colleen Schmidt; her brother Thomas Schmidt; her sister LuAnne (Jay) Mellis; her nieces and nephews, Patrick (Dayana) Mellis, Maria (Austin) Masalskis-Hardie, Craig (Cassy) Mellis; and her great-nephew Dominic. She is also survived by the entire Schmidt clan and her Zentner/Metzler relatives.
Her absence will be felt profoundly by family, dear neighbors, and many friends.
Cathleen graduated from Carrick High School and made her home in the South Hills. For 36 years, she was a respected and valued staff member in the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Her strong work ethic, bright mind, and collegial attitude propelled her career from a start in support staff to her retirement as an Information Technology (IT) Specialist. She always went the extra mile, whether to ensure that work got done or to help make office birthdays more special.
At work, at home, or at play, Cathleen was always finding ways to make the world a better place. She was a helper and a giver, an unfailingly thoughtful person, and a steadfast friend. People looked forward every year to her hand-made candy and homemade Christmas ornaments. She was an excellent cook and a gracious hostess. She was a frequent donor at the Central Blood Bank. She enjoyed going to the theater, loved a good game night, and was an avid tennis player all of her life. She was also known in certain circles for her skills in volleyball and water skiing. And, as a true Pittsburgh girl, she could load up a cookie table or twirl a Terrible Towel with the best of them.
Cathleen was a wonderful human and a remarkable woman who faced a cancer diagnosis and two years of treatment with dignity and grace. Her courage and her kindness will not be forgotten. Her caring nature, her camaraderie, and her delightful sense of humor will be missed forever.
The family extends their boundless thanks to the multitude of people who helped during this difficult journey. From car rides and good cooking to kind words and sweet gestures, you showed up and surrounded Cathleen with love and support.
