Bernard Thornton, Jr. Obituary

Bernard W. Thornton, Jr.

Age 84, on Thursday, September 2, 2021, of Carrick. Husband of the late Carolyn L. (Martin) Thornton. Father of Susan (Thomas) Orefice, Linda (William) Rafaloski, and Diane (Todd) Crocco. Grandfather of Sarah (Stephen) Trevorrow and Alexander Orefice, Joshua (Karabeth) and Tyler (Christi) Miller, and Nicholas Rafaloski, and Miranda and Morgan Crocco. Son of the late Ruth and Bernard Thornton, Sr. Brother of James Thornton, and the late Mary Ruth Dauk, Geraldine, and William Thornton. Visitations Monday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Boron Funeral Home, Inc., 1719 Brownsville Road. Funeral Prayers on Tuesday at 10 AM. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish at St. Basil Church at 10:30 AM. If desired, contributions may be made to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh or your local animal shelter.  Bernie was a 1955 graduate of Peabody High School and Veteran of the US Navy. He was an Aviation Electronic Technician (Navigator) in Heavy Attack Squadron ONE and spent most of his service on aircraft carriers in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. After the Navy, he enrolled into St. Francis Hospital‘s School of Radiologic Technology and went on to become the Administrator for the Department of Radiology.  He retired from St. Francis Health System in 1999. Bernie was an avid reader and enjoyed photography, playing golf, fishing, and boating. He liked to stay busy and was everyone’s handyman. If you presented him with a problem, he would disappear into the garage and return with something he had made to solve the problem. He taught his three daughters to be self-sufficient, independent, and to turn each challenge into a learning experience.  His daughters were an immense source of pride and joy.  Bernie also had a fondness for dogs (especially his grandpuppies), cookies and anything chocolate; but his greatest love was for his wife Carolyn.
