Edward A. Kern 94 of Carrick, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Born March 27, 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Albert and Dolly (Brooks) Kern.

Ed attended school in the Baldwin School District and proudly served our country in the United States Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. He worked for 46 years as a diesel mechanic for LTV Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh.

For many years, Ed was a member of the Concord Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh and more recently, a member of the Spencer United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh. He faithfully served his congregation at various times, as both an elder and a deacon. Ed was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 383, was active in the Civil Air Patrol, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Neighborhood Block Watch. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching football and golf on TV, and could build or repair just about anything.

After retirement, Ed became an avid walker taking several hikes a day. Over the years, he became a familiar site along Brownsville Road where many people came to recognize him as he walked, often stopping to collect cans along the way. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, sitting on the front porch with his wife and chatting with neighbors and passersby.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Zola, who passed in April and 3 sisters, Margaret Igo, Dora Whewell and Alberta Shawhan.

Ed is survived by his children, Vernon (Joyce) Kern of Parker, PA, Martha (Gary) Walsh of Middletown, RI and Theresa (Robert, Jr.) Lorenz of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren, Gary (Jennifer) Walsh, Jr., Andrea (Andrew) Steiner, Melissa (Marc) Christian, Terri Lynn Walsh, Kristina (Tommy) Lorenz, and Robert Lorenz, III; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Robert Kern of Elizabeth, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-7:30 PM in the Boron Funeral Home, Inc. 1719 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210. Funeral services on Friday are private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed's name to the Spencer United Methodist Church 117 Spencer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.
